Renowned political thinker and religious scholar Agha Murtaza Pooya passed away in Karachi on Friday after a prolonged illness.
He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital for the past few weeks.
A distinguished personality in both political and religious circles, Mr Pooya served as a federal minister and also headed the Institute of Strategic Studies. He was known for his intellectual depth and active role in public affairs, particularly during critical junctures of Pakistan’s political history.
He was also the founder and publisher of a prominent English-language newspaper, through which he sought to influence national discourse and promote informed dialogue on foreign policy, religious harmony, and constitutional affairs.
Agha Murtaza was affiliated with the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), where he served as the party’s senior vice president. His association with the PAT reflected his deep interest in reformist politics and religious activism.
His funeral prayers will be held today (Friday) after Juma prayers at Imambargah Sadiq G-9 in Islamabad. Political figures, religious scholars, and civil society members are expected to attend.
