In an unusual act of defiance, a 70-year-old man in the Spanish town of Cervera released a swarm of bees on traffic police officers after being pulled over for erratic driving.
According to Spanish media reports, the incident occurred when officers stopped the elderly driver’s van for not wearing a seatbelt and suspected signs of intoxication. Upon being asked to undergo a breathalyser test, the man reportedly responded aggressively, warning the officers: “I should have crushed you.”
The initial breath test returned a positive result, prompting police to request a second test. However, the driver became increasingly agitated, shouted threats, and proceeded to the rear of his vehicle, where he allegedly retrieved a beehive and unleashed it on the officers.
Two police personnel sustained multiple bee stings and were forced to seek refuge in a nearby restaurant. Additional units were dispatched to the scene, and the man was later located and taken into custody. He was, however, released on bail a few hours later.
Authorities confirmed that while the officers suffered minor injuries, they did not require hospitalisation.
The bizarre episode quickly gained traction on social media, with many users reacting with humour and dubbing it “the revenge of the beekeeper.”
Police have not confirmed whether the beehive was being legally transported or if the incident will lead to further legal action.
