The Power Division declared on Sunday recent reports circulating on social media about a ban on installing a second electricity meter as entirely "false and misleading".
According to a spokesperson for the Power Division, such claims are "completely baseless and a deliberate attempt to create public unrest." Spreading or sharing false information constitutes a punishable offence under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
The Power Division said that a second electricity meter may be obtained for any residential area in accordance with the prevailing laws and regulations. The public has been urged not to pay attention to such misinformation.
Under the NEPRA Consumer Services Manual 2021, separate meters are permitted in residential properties that consist of distinct portions with separate entrances and kitchens.
Laws aimed at preventing electricity theft and misuse of subsidies were already in place and continue to be fully enforced.
