UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on India and Pakistan to exercise "maximum restraint" following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that killed at least 26 people.
UN secretary general spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, urged both countries to avoid further escalation in the already tense region.
“We very much appeal to both the governments of Pakistan and India to exercise maximum restraint and ensure the situation does not deteriorate any further,” Dujarric said at a press briefing on Thursday.
He reiterated the UN’s strong condemnation of the 'terror attack' in Jammu and Kashmir, Most of the victims were tourists.
The attack has further strained bilateral ties. India has expelled Pakistani diplomats, cancelled visas, and halted trade links. Islamabad responded with similar measures.
Commenting on India’s move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, Dujarric said, “This falls under our appeal for restraint and avoiding actions that could raise tensions in an already volatile area.”
Dujarric also confirmed that Secretary-General Guterres has not directly spoken with the leaders of either country since the incident but emphasized the need for peaceful resolution through meaningful dialogue.
