Punjab’s Information and Culture Minister Azma Bukhari conducted surprise raids on three prominent theatres in Lahore late on Wednesday night, taking strict action against alleged violations of cultural standards.
The minister raided Mehfil Theatre, Prince Theatre, and Tamaseel Theatre, inspecting cafeterias, dressing rooms, and performance halls. Expressing strong dissatisfaction, she criticized the songs played during stage performances and the attire of the actors.
During the inspections, Azma Bukhari also expressed her displeasure over the working methods of Punjab Arts Council officials and the poor cleanliness arrangements in the theatres.
As a result of the raids, show-cause notices were issued to five well-known stage artists, including Sajan Abbas, Neeli, Saima Khan, Nayab Khan, and Sonu Butt, stressing that no one will be allowed to spread vulgarity and indecency in theatres. The minister warned that any artist violating the government’s SOPs would face a lifetime ban from performing in Punjab’s theatres.
Speaking to the media, Azma Bukhari reiterated her stance against vulgarity in theatre performances.
"I do not want to snatch anyone’s livelihood, but I will not allow obscenity and indecency in Punjab’s theatres," she declared.
She also called on theatre owners to take responsibility, urging them to promote quality content with meaningful themes that provide decent entertainment for the public.
"Now, those who spoil the atmosphere of theatres will not be allowed to work in Punjab," she added.
