Government vehicles in Lahore have emerged as the leading violators of traffic laws, prompting authorities to consider stricter measures to curb the trend.
A new proposal suggests withholding the salaries of government drivers until their traffic fines are paid.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed has introduced a controversial idea to calculate fines based on social and financial status instead of the nature of the violation.
"The larger the vehicle, the larger the fine," said Waheed, citing that luxury vehicles worth Rs50 million should face penalties 10 times higher than standard rates. "Police and traffic police vehicles have violated the law the most."
The initiative aims to improve road discipline and accountability, particularly among government and law enforcement vehicles, which are reported to break traffic laws most frequently.
Additionally, the CTO announced a crackdown on beggars, especially those making women and children beg on the city's roads.
"There is no place for beggars on Lahore’s streets," Waheed asserted, adding that cases will be registered against violators.
