The prosecutor general of Punjab has raised serious concerns about the handling of a case involving the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl by a 58-year-old policeman in Sargodha.
Declaring the case "high-profile", Prosecutor General Faryad Ali Shah has formally written to the chief justice of the Lahore High Court, condemning a local magistrate’s alleged offer for the minor victim to marry the suspect as a means of reconciliation.
The disturbing details emerged after the prosecutor general office reported that the local magistrate had pressured the victim, under the pretence of achieving reconciliation, to agree to marry the man suspected of raping her.
Punjab Prosecutor General Shah summoned the investigation team to his office and sought all the documents related to the investigation. The prosecution officer then wrote a letter to the LHC chief justice on the magistrate's illegal offer.
The prosecutor general's office has expressed grave concerns over the magistrate's suggestion, which they believe violates both the rights of the minor victim and the principles of justice.
