The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a reminder to all members of parliament, urging them to submit their assets returns by December 31.
The commission has emphasized that the returns must include the details of assets owned by the members, as well as those of their spouses and dependent children.
In an official statement, the ECP warned that any members who fail to submit their financial returns by the deadline will face suspension of their parliamentary membership. According to the commission’s spokesperson, the suspension will come into effect on January 16, and members will be barred from performing their legislative duties until they comply with the regulations.
"The suspension will remain in place until the returns are submitted, and no member will be allowed to carry out their responsibilities during this period," the spokesperson added.
The ECP also stated that action will be taken against those who provide inaccurate or misleading details in their returns. Strict measures are being implemented to ensure transparency and accountability among the lawmakers.
Meanwhile, a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja on allocation of reserved seats to the PTI remained inconclusive. Sources said that no decision could be taken regarding issuance of a notification regarding reserved seats.
They said that due to the absence of members from Sindh and Balochistan, the commission could not take any decision. The election commission decided to seek an opinion from constitutional and legal experts on the issue. The ECP decided to call another meeting on the issue after the holidays, the sources added.
