Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster The Odyssey has become the director's highest-grossing film ever, surpassing the previous record held by The Dark Knight Rises.
The epic adventure, starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Samantha Morton and Charlize Theron, has earned $1.104 billion worldwide in less than a month since its release.
The film overtook The Dark Knight Rises, which grossed approximately $1.085 billion globally following its 2012 release.
Nolan's biggest hit yet
The milestone marks a new box office high for Nolan, whose previous films have also achieved major commercial success.
The Dark Knight crossed the $1 billion mark in 2009, while Oppenheimer earned around $975 million worldwide after becoming a major global success in 2023.
The Odyssey, based on Homer's ancient Greek epic, has now moved ahead of all of Nolan's previous films despite still having additional markets to open.
IMAX record
The film has also achieved a major milestone for IMAX, becoming the company's highest-grossing domestic release, with reported domestic IMAX earnings of $147.3 million.
The film could push its worldwide total even higher with its upcoming release in China.
A strong year for billion-dollar films
The Odyssey is also part of a strong year for the global box office, with several films already crossing the $1 billion mark.
The success comes as cinemas continue to recover from the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with major releases such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day also contributing to renewed audience interest in theatrical releases.
With The Odyssey still playing in cinemas, Nolan's latest blockbuster is expected to extend its record in the weeks ahead.
