Iran's Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei, has appointed several senior military commanders as part of a major restructuring of the country's military command system.
Under the new arrangement, Iran's General Staff of the Armed Forces and Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters have been ordered to merge into a single command structure.
The General Staff is responsible for military policy, planning and coordination across Iran's armed forces, while Khatam al-Anbiya serves as the country's highest operational military command.
The merger brings strategic planning and battlefield operations under a unified command structure, a significant change to Iran's military leadership system.
Senior commanders appointed
Mojtaba Khamenei has appointed senior figures to key positions in the new military structure.
Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi has been named Chief of the General Staff and tasked with overseeing the implementation of the merger.
Maj. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi has been appointed commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Vahidi is a veteran IRGC commander and former Quds Force chief.
Amir Kiumars Heydari, former commander of the Army Ground Forces, has been appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff.
Maj. Gen. Mostafa Izadi, a veteran IRGC commander, has been appointed Deputy Commander of the IRGC.
Ali Ozmayi has been named commander of the IRGC Navy, with his responsibilities including Iran's naval forces in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Hossein Taeb, the former head of the IRGC Intelligence Organization, has been appointed head of the Basij Organization of the Oppressed.
Military command consolidated
The appointments place experienced and hardline security figures in several of Iran's most important military positions.
The restructuring also gives the new command structure greater control over both military policy and operational decision-making.
The changes come as Iran continues to strengthen its military and security apparatus amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing confrontation with the United States and Israel.
