OpenAI has launched its latest GPT-5.6 family of artificial intelligence models, introducing three new variants designed for enterprise, coding and scientific applications, alongside ChatGPT Work, a new productivity tool aimed at workplace teams.
OpenAI on Thursday unveiled GPT-5.6, its newest family of large language models, as competition in the artificial intelligence sector continues to intensify.
The new lineup consists of three models:
- GPT-5.6 Sol – the flagship model for demanding workloads
- GPT-5.6 Terra – a mid-range option balancing performance and cost
- GPT-5.6 Luna – a budget-friendly model designed for lower-cost deployments
According to the company, the models expand AI capabilities across enterprise workflows, software development and scientific research.
Improved coding and cybersecurity performance
OpenAI says GPT-5.6 is its strongest cybersecurity model to date, capable of supporting defensive security tasks such as:
- Threat modelling
- Code review
- Security patching
- Blue-team simulations to identify vulnerabilities before attackers exploit them
Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman said the flagship Sol model is 54% more token-efficient than previous models when handling AI coding tasks, making it faster and more cost-effective.
ChatGPT Work targets businesses
Alongside GPT-5.6, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work, a workplace-focused assistant available on desktop, web and mobile platforms.
The tool is designed to help enterprise users with everyday office tasks, including:
- Drafting documents
- Creating spreadsheets
- Preparing presentations
- Managing routine administrative work
The launch reflects OpenAI's growing focus on enterprise customers.
Competition with Anthropic intensifies
The GPT-5.6 release comes shortly after new AI announcements from Meta and SpaceXAI, but OpenAI appears to be positioning its latest models directly against rival Anthropic.
Citing results from the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, OpenAI said its flagship Sol model achieved a benchmark score of 80, outperforming Anthropic's latest Fable 5 model while using less than half the output tokens, completing tasks in less than half the time and costing roughly one-third less.
The company also claimed:
- Terra slightly outperforms Fable 5.
- Luna surpasses Anthropic's Opus 4.8 model.
Availability and pricing
OpenAI said GPT-5.6 is now available through:
- ChatGPT
- Codex
- OpenAI API
The pricing per one million tokens is:
| Model | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | $5 | $30 |
| GPT-5.6 Terra | $2.50 | $15 |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | $1 | $6 |
