Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday declared the 100-megawatt solar energy project for Gilgit-Baltistan a "gift" from the federal government, directing authorities to ensure its timely completion with full transparency.
Chairing a review meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister said expanding solar energy is a key pillar of Pakistan's national energy strategy aimed at promoting clean, affordable and sustainable power.
"The 100MW solar project is a gift from the federal government to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan," the prime minister said, instructing the Power Division to complete the project on schedule and uphold transparency throughout its implementation.
He also ordered that the procurement process remain transparent and directed that all project payments be released only after third-party verification.
499 govt buildings to get rooftop solar systems
Officials informed the meeting that 18MW rooftop solar systems, equipped with battery storage, will be installed on 499 government buildings by December 2026.

The meeting was further briefed that the PC-1 for the 82MW utility-scale solar project has been submitted to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for approval.
1.3 million people expected to benefit
According to the briefing, around 1.3 million people are expected to benefit from the project.
Once completed, the solar initiative is expected to improve electricity services across Gilgit-Baltistan and significantly reduce load shedding in the region.
The meeting was attended by Power Minister Sardar Awais Leghari, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, and other senior government officials.
