The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has released the Punjab report of the 7th Digital Agriculture Census 2024, revealing an increase in cultivated land, livestock and agricultural machinery across the province over the past 14 years.
The report was officially unveiled by Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Hafiz Mian Muhammad Noman, who said the census would provide a strong foundation for agricultural policymaking and future development strategies.
According to the report, Punjab's cultivated land increased from 27.034 million acres in 2010 to 29.645 million acres in 2024.
The census found that crops were cultivated on 26.69 million acres during the Rabi season and 22.22 million acres during the Kharif season.
About 96% of the province's cultivated land is irrigated through canal systems and tube wells.
Wheat remains largest crop
Wheat remained Punjab's largest crop, covering 20.653 million acres.
Other major crops included:
- Rice: 6.674 million acres
- Fodder: 6.660 million acres
- Cotton: 3.833 million acres
- Maize: 2.149 million acres
- Sugarcane: 1.852 million acres
Livestock population reaches 104mln
The report shows Punjab's livestock population increased from 61 million in 2006 to 104 million in 2024.
Punjab now accounts for around 62% of Pakistan's total large animal population.
The province's livestock includes:
- Goats: 31.3 million
- Buffaloes: 29.56 million
- Cows: 26.97 million
- Sheep: 13.38 million
- Camels: 250,000
Agricultural machinery
According to the census, Punjab possesses about 79% of the country's tractors.
The province also has approximately 76,000 tube wells, supporting its irrigation network.
First digital agriculture census in 14 years
Chief Statistician Dr Naeem-ul-Zafar said the 7th Agriculture Census was conducted after a gap of 14 years and marked a major milestone in Pakistan's statistical history.
He said the census was completed in two phases between September 2024 and February 2025, using modern digital technology to ensure transparency, accuracy and efficiency.
The census collected comprehensive data on agriculture, livestock and agricultural machinery.
Government sees census as policy tool
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Parliamentary Secretary Hafiz Mian Muhammad Noman said the availability of modern and accurate agricultural data would help improve policymaking, planning and development in the sector.
He said the census aligns with the government's "Uraan Pakistan" 5Es Vision, which aims to transform Pakistan into a $3 trillion economy.
