The World Bank is considering launching a skills development program and a health compact in Pakistan, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The proposals came under discussion during a meeting between Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema and World Bank Vice President Mamta Murthi, where both sides reviewed potential new initiatives aimed at strengthening human development.
According to an official statement, the meeting focused on expanding cooperation in key sectors, including health, education and workforce development.
The World Bank informed the Pakistani side that it is evaluating the possibility of introducing a health compact and a comprehensive skills development program in the country.
Federal Minister Ahad Cheema welcomed the World Bank’s interest in supporting Pakistan’s health, education and skills sectors.
He emphasized that skills development initiatives should be aligned with the evolving needs of the economy and industry to ensure better employment opportunities for young people.
Digital solutions needed in healthcare
During the meeting, Cheema stressed the importance of integrating digital technology into Pakistan’s primary healthcare system.
He said improving health services through digital solutions is essential for enhancing service delivery and expanding access to healthcare across the country.
The minister also expressed hope that the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private-sector arm of the World Bank Group, would play a more active role in supporting health and skills development projects in Pakistan.
He noted that training programs should be designed according to industry requirements to help bridge the gap between education and employment.
Ahad Cheema reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening partnerships aimed at achieving human development goals.
He said creating better employment opportunities for Pakistan’s youth remains a top priority and that targeted skills programs can play a key role in preparing young people for the modern job market.
