A surprising leak involving Google’s upcoming wearable has taken the tech world by storm after an alleged Pixel Watch 5 prototype was reportedly recovered from the ocean near the Caribbean island of St. Martin.
The device, which has not yet been officially announced by Google, surfaced in an unusual way when it was discovered by a scuba diver during an underwater dive, according to a social media post by game developer Randy Pitchford.
The incident first came to light through a post on X (formerly Twitter), where Pitchford shared that a friend of his had found the smartwatch submerged underwater while diving near St. Martin.
He stated that the device appeared to be a Google Pixel Watch 5 based on markings found on the back of the unit, despite the product not yet being officially revealed by Google.
Photos shared in the post showed the front and back of the watch, which closely resembles previous Pixel Watch models but reportedly includes faint text identifying it as the “Pixel Watch 5.”
Device appears intact despite being submerged
According to the post, the smartwatch appeared to be in working condition despite being recovered from underwater.
The design of the device looks similar to last year’s model, suggesting an incremental upgrade rather than a major redesign, although official specifications remain unknown.
Pitchford also explained that the reason for sharing the discovery publicly was to help identify and return the device to its rightful owner.
In a follow-up update, Pitchford confirmed that thanks to online engagement, the owner of the device had been located and arrangements had been made for its return.
The development has added further credibility to the claim that the device may be an early prototype being tested ahead of launch.
Google remains silent on leak
As of now, Google has not issued any official statement regarding the reported Pixel Watch 5 discovery.
The company typically unveils its Pixel devices later in the year, with previous launches taking place during the summer or early fall season.
The timing of the leak has fueled speculation that the Pixel Watch 5 may already be in its final testing phase ahead of an expected announcement in the coming months.
Unusual nature of the leak raises questions
While early leaks of unreleased devices are common in the tech industry, they usually occur in controlled environments such as retail packaging, repair shops, or developer testing units.
However, the discovery of a prototype smartwatch underwater has sparked curiosity about how the device ended up in such an unusual location.
Some online observers have even speculated whether the watch was being tested for durability in extreme conditions, although no evidence has confirmed such claims.
If the device is confirmed to be a genuine Pixel Watch 5 prototype, it could offer an early glimpse into Google’s next-generation wearable strategy.
The leak also comes at a time when anticipation is building for Google’s next Pixel hardware lineup, including smartphones and wearables expected later this year.
