A new escalation between the United States and Iran unfolded overnight as both sides reported military operations targeting strategic assets in and around the Strait of Hormuz, with conflicting claims emerging over missile strikes, drone interceptions and attacks on military facilities.
The latest confrontation has further heightened tensions in the Gulf region, despite an existing ceasefire framework that both sides accuse the other of violating.
According to a statement from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), US forces attacked an Iranian oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz overnight. It said the strike damaged the vessel’s engine room and described it as a direct act of aggression.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the incident, saying the attack violated the existing ceasefire agreement.
Revolutionary Guards claim retaliatory attacks
The IRGC said it responded to the tanker attack by launching naval missiles at what it described as US and Israeli ships operating in the region. Iranian officials said they had previously warned that any aggression would be met with a strong response.
“Retaliatory attacks should be a lesson for the United States,” the Revolutionary Guards said in a statement.
The IRGC further warned that Washington would have to pay the price for disrupting security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran also accused US forces of attacking a communications tower belonging to the Revolutionary Guards on Qeshm Island.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the telecommunications facility was targeted by American forces, describing the strike as another violation of the ceasefire.
According to Iranian officials, the attack prompted a second wave of retaliatory military action.
Iran claims attacks on Fifth Fleet headquarters, helicopters
The Revolutionary Guards said they targeted the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet as well as helicopters and other military assets in response to the attack on Qeshm Island. Iranian media reported that the strikes were carried out using missiles and drones.
Tehran maintained that the operations were part of a broader retaliatory campaign against US military actions in the region.
CENTCOM rejects Iranian claims
US Central Command (CENTCOM) strongly denied reports that Iran successfully struck the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. According to CENTCOM, reports of attacks on US headquarters and an airbase in Bahrain were false.
The command said all Iranian missile and drone attacks failed to reach their intended targets.

CENTCOM stated that two missiles fired toward Kuwait failed before reaching their targets. The US military also said three missiles launched toward Bahrain were intercepted and destroyed by Bahraini forces before impact.
According to the command, Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at neighboring countries did not succeed in hitting any targets.
US military conducts operations on Qeshm Island
In response to what it described as attempted Iranian attacks, CENTCOM said US forces carried out military operations on Qeshm Island. The command confirmed that American forces targeted an Iranian military ground control station on the island.
US officials said the action was taken in response to Iranian threats and attempted attacks against regional targets.

ENTCOM also reported intercepting multiple Iranian drones during the latest escalation. According to the US military, three drones heading toward naval vessels were shot down before they could reach their targets.
The command added that on Tuesday US forces successfully thwarted several Iranian ballistic missile and drone threats.
Iranian military claims major damage
Iranian military officials painted a very different picture of the overnight confrontation. Ali Reza Elhami, commander of Iran’s Joint Air Defense Headquarters, said Iranian forces had inflicted significant damage on enemy assets.
“The enemy drones destroyed the naval fleet and ended their air superiority,” Elhami said.
He added that Iranian retaliatory operations caused extraordinary damage and demonstrated the country's growing military strength.
Iran says combat capability has increased
Elhami said Iran’s military readiness and combat capability are stronger than before. According to the commander, opposing forces are now publicly acknowledging the destruction of their drones.
He argued that recent events proved Iran’s ability to respond effectively to external military pressure.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry also accused Kuwait and Bahrain of being directly involved in US military operations against Iran. The ministry alleged that the territory of both countries was being used to facilitate military actions targeting Iran.
Iran warned that it reserves the right to defend itself and vowed that any future attacks would receive a strong response.
Strait of Hormuz remains flashpoint
The latest exchange underscores the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes.
With both Washington and Tehran presenting sharply different accounts of the overnight events, concerns continue to grow over the possibility of further escalation in the Gulf region.
The competing narratives also highlight the fragile state of regional security as military operations, diplomatic tensions and ceasefire disputes continue to overlap.
