Russia carried out a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv early Sunday, killing at least one person and injuring 21 others, according to Ukrainian officials.
The strikes damaged residential buildings, offices, schools, and other civilian infrastructure across multiple districts.
Authorities said the attack involved a wave of missiles and drones that struck the city shortly after 1 a.m. local time.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that one person was killed after a nine-story residential building in the Shevchenko district was hit during the attack.
Emergency services were deployed to extinguish fires and search for survivors, while rescue teams worked to evacuate trapped residents from damaged structures.
Officials said several people were trapped inside shelters after debris blocked exits in affected buildings.
Dozens injured across the city
At least 21 people were injured in the capital, with 13 hospitalized and three reported to be in serious condition, according to city officials.
The Kyiv military administration said more than 40 locations across the city were damaged, including residential buildings, offices, shops, and transport infrastructure.
Additional injuries were reported in the wider Kyiv region, where three more people were wounded.
Residents forced into shelters overnight
Air raid sirens sounded across Kyiv as explosions echoed through the city, forcing residents to seek shelter in underground metro stations and emergency bunkers.
Witnesses described prolonged periods of fear and uncertainty as explosions continued throughout the night.
Many residents remained in shelters for hours as the attack unfolded.
As daylight broke, images from Kyiv showed widespread destruction, including collapsed building facades and ongoing fires.
In the Shevchenko district, parts of a residential building collapsed, while nearby schools and commercial buildings were also damaged.
Officials reported damage to metro station entrances and a post office located in Independence Square.
Tensions rise after warnings of missile use
Ukraine’s air force had earlier warned of a possible missile strike, including the potential use of a hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile, though it did not confirm whether such a weapon was deployed in this attack.
Ukrainian authorities have previously stated that Russia has used the Oreshnik missile in earlier strikes, while Moscow has claimed it is highly advanced and difficult to intercept.
Following the large-scale attack, neighboring Poland activated its military aviation as a precautionary measure, although no violations of Polish airspace were reported.
The incident comes amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides continuing to exchange accusations over recent strikes and military actions.
