A gunman was shot dead after opening fire on officers near a White House security checkpoint on Saturday evening, the US Secret Service confirmed.
A bystander was also struck during the exchange of gunfire and was taken for medical treatment.
Authorities said the incident took place near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., an area close to the White House.

According to the Secret Service, the suspect approached a security checkpoint carrying a bag and pulled out a firearm before opening fire on officers stationed at the location.
Officers immediately returned fire, striking the suspect. He was later transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Officials described the suspect as an “emotionally disturbed person” and confirmed that a prior stay-away order had been issued against him.
Bystander injured during exchange
A bystander was also hit during the shooting incident. Authorities said it remains unclear whether the individual was struck by the suspect’s initial gunfire or during the exchange of fire between the suspect and officers.
The condition of the injured person has not been fully disclosed.

I was in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots. It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now. pic.twitter.com/iqdQwh4soq
