Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on an official visit linked to ongoing diplomatic and mediation efforts aimed at promoting regional stability and conflict resolution.
Upon arrival in the Iranian capital, the Field Marshal was received by Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni during a formal welcome ceremony.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was also present at the reception, highlighting the importance Islamabad is attaching to regional diplomatic engagement amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The trip comes at a sensitive regional moment, with reports of ongoing diplomatic activity involving the US and Iran.
High-level meetings on security and regional stability are expected during the visit with senior Iranian leadership.
Security sources say the discussions will include matters of mutual interest between Pakistan and Iran. The visit is expected to focus on broader regional developments and security coordination.
Officials indicate that key topics may include the evolving situation in the region and ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Iran and the United States.
Regional situation, Iran-US talks in focus
According to sources, the meetings are expected to cover the overall security environment in the region. This includes developments related to Iran-US engagement and other strategic issues.
Arab media reports have claimed that a draft agreement between the United States and Iran, allegedly mediated by Pakistan, could be announced within hours.
The proposed draft is said to include key points such as:
- Immediate ceasefire across land, sea, and air
- Reduction of tensions and easing of sanctions
- Respect for sovereignty and non-interference
- Protection of territorial integrity
The report also suggests provisions for freedom of navigation in the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman.
Proposed mechanism for implementation
The reported agreement includes plans for a joint monitoring system to oversee implementation and handle disputes.
It also suggests that negotiations on remaining issues would begin within seven days if progress is made.
According to the draft details, the United States would gradually ease sanctions in exchange for compliance with agreed terms by Iran.
The framework reportedly reaffirms adherence to the UN Charter and international law principles.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described recent talks as showing “positive signs,” while noting that clarity on outcomes may take several days.
Meanwhile, an Iranian source quoted by Reuters said differences had narrowed, though key disagreements remain over uranium enrichment and the Strait of Hormuz.
