At least eight people were killed and 32 injured in a tragic accident in Bangkok, Thailand.
A freight train struck a bus at a rail crossing, causing a fire that quickly engulfed the vehicle and nearby traffic.
At least eight people lost their lives and 32 others were injured on Saturday after a freight train hit a public bus at a rail crossing in Bangkok, Thailand.
The impact caused a large fire that engulfed the bus and spread chaos across the surrounding area near the Airport Rail Link’s Makkasan station.
Emergency services, including firefighters and rescue teams, were immediately deployed to control the blaze and assist victims.
How the accident happened
According to Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat, initial reports suggest the bus was stopped on the railway tracks at a red light.
This positioning reportedly prevented the safety barriers from fully closing in time.
The freight train, which was carrying containers, was unable to stop before colliding with the bus.
Officials confirmed that all eight fatalities were passengers on the bus.
Fire engulfs bus and nearby vehicles
The collision triggered an intense fire that quickly spread, engulfing the bus and affecting nearby vehicles.
Officials said the crash also involved several cars and motorcycles in the vicinity of the crossing.
Videos shared on social media showed the moment of impact, followed by flames and destruction along the tracks.
Eyewitness accounts from the scene
Witnesses described the chaos following the collision.
A motorcycle taxi driver, Wanthong Kokpho, said the bus was trapped at the crossing and unable to move as the train approached.
He noted that cars were also blocked at the intersection, leaving no space to escape.
He added that the fire erupted immediately after the impact and could have caused even greater damage if it had occurred on a normal working day.
Rescue teams worked for hours to pull injured passengers from the wreckage.
Firefighters used water hoses to control the blaze, while additional crews focused on cooling the area, venting gas, and searching for victims.
Authorities later brought the fire under control and confirmed that investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
Thailand has long struggled with road and traffic safety issues.
According to the World Health Organization, the country’s roads are among the deadliest globally due to weak enforcement of safety regulations.
The latest tragedy has once again raised concerns about rail crossing safety and traffic management in urban areas.
