The sacrifice of Liaqat Shaheed, son of Karim Elahi, who saved precious lives by stopping a suicide bomber, has received recognition at the national level.
On the recommendation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the conferment of the Sitara-e-Shujaat upon Liaqat Shaheed. Officials said Liaqat Shaheed sacrificed his own life and prevented major loss of life through his courageous action.
They said his bravery, sense of duty and sacrifice remained a shining example for the entire nation.
The recommendation by the prime minister and approval by the president were termed as national acknowledgement of the sacrifice made by a national hero. Sitara-e-Shujaat is Pakistan’s second-highest civil award for bravery.
Officials said Liaqat Shaheed displayed extraordinary courage by standing firmly against the evil intentions of the suicide attacker.
The nation paid tribute to its brave son and described his sacrifice as a symbol of the country’s unwavering resolve against terrorism.
Family members of Liaqat Shaheed left for Islamabad to receive the Sitara-e-Shujaat award.
His mother, son and brother are due to receive the award from the President of Pakistan.
The family departed for Islamabad under full official protocol, accompanied by Assistant Commissioner Jand and an Elite Force security contingent for their protection and convenience.
Officials said the award approved on the recommendation of the Prime Minister would be received by the family later on Wednesday evening.
