Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the International Atomic Energy Agency was not responsible for issuing political statements on the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s missile programme or Tehran’s policies.
According to details surfaced on Sunday, in his statement, Baqaei said the IAEA’s mandate was limited to monitoring and verification duties. He said political remarks regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s missile programme or Tehran’s policies did not fall within the agency’s responsibilities.
Baqaei said institutions lost credibility when professional neutrality became subject to politics or personal interests.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said such institutions gradually lost their importance over time. He added that, under the IAEA’s charter, the organisation’s primary responsibility was to monitor and verify nuclear programmes to ensure nuclear material was used solely for peaceful purposes.
