German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on Iran to come immediately to the negotiating table and end its 'aggressive' policies in the region.
In a statement, he said a possible blockade of the Strait of Hormuz could pose a serious threat to the global economy and may lead to widespread economic losses. He added that pressure through sanctions on Iran must be increased to keep the waterway open.
The German chancellor warned that Germany is considering all options, including military action, to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. He urged Iran to halt attacks against Israel and other regional partners.
Friedrich Merz said that Iran’s nuclear programme poses a threat to global peace and must be brought to an end. He reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to stand with Nato and its transatlantic partners, and said work would continue with the United States to ensure global stability.
