The government’s efforts to persuade international social media companies to open offices in Pakistan have failed.
According to details that emerged on Thursday showed that Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, along with other firms, have shown little interest in registering in the country. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) submitted a written report to the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology.
The PTA said it had contacted all major social media companies regarding registration in Pakistan but had not received a positive response. It attributed the reluctance to concerns over criminal proceedings, lack of regulatory clarity, and prevailing business conditions.
Moreover, the PTA also submitted a report regarding the removal of a tweet related to Israel by the defence minister from X. It said no request had been received from the complainant for restoration of the deleted tweet.
The PTA said that in Islamabad that no action has so far been taken in the matter. It added that any future complaint would be dealt with in accordance with the prescribed procedure.
