Aamir Khan has confirmed that a sequel to the iconic film 3 Idiots is officially in the works.
The update has reignited excitement among fans more than a decade after the original’s release.
Speaking in a recent conversation, Aamir Khan revealed that the sequel is currently being developed.
The story is being crafted around the original characters, set roughly 10 years after the events of the first film. He shared that he has already heard the script, although it is still being refined.
Hirani and Joshi leading the project
The sequel is being worked on by director Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi—the same duo behind the original film.
Aamir noted that Hirani is currently focused on completing the sequel, adding that the story has “turned out very well.”
Aamir also revealed that another planned project based on the life of Dadasaheb Phalke has been paused.
He explained that the team was not fully satisfied with the script drafts, leading to a temporary halt while attention shifted to 3 Idiots 2.
Aamir eager to return as Rancho
The actor expressed enthusiasm about reprising his role as Rancho—one of his most popular characters.
He said he is looking forward to stepping back into the role, noting that the sequel will retain the humour and emotional depth of the original while offering a fresh narrative.
Earlier doubts from cast members
Last year, Aamir Khan and R. Madhavan had downplayed the possibility of a sequel amid speculation.
Madhavan had questioned how the story would evolve, given the actors’ age and the passage of time, calling the idea “interesting” but difficult to execute.
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots remains one of the most successful and influential films in Indian cinema.
The confirmation of a sequel has already generated strong anticipation, as fans look forward to revisiting the beloved characters in a new phase of their lives.
