The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has issued a clarification regarding licensing requirements for solar consumers.
A Nepra spokesperson said in an explanatory note that off-grid solar consumers do not require a licence, nor is any such proposal under consideration. According to the Nepra spokesperson, off-grid solar users have no connection with the national grid and do not fall within the categories of net metering or net billing. Under the new regulations, however, solar consumers operating under net metering are required to obtain a licence.
Under previous rules, only solar consumers with a capacity exceeding 25 kilowatts were required to secure a licence from the authority. Consumers with a capacity of 25 kilowatts or less were required only to obtain approval from distribution companies.
Nepra’s new regulations have been in force since February this year.
