Pakistan has decided to proceed with the spot purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
According to details surfaced on Thursday, the Pakistan LNG Limited has invited bids for three LNG cargoes, with international companies permitted to submit offers until 24 April.
The bids are to be opened on April 24. Offers have been called for cargoes scheduled for April and May. The first cargo is set for delivery between April 27 and 30. The second cargo is scheduled for 1 to 7 May, while the third cargo is planned for 8 to 14 May.
The decision to procure LNG has been taken in an effort to ease load shedding in the power sector. Disruption in LNG supply from Qatar has left power plants with a capacity of 6,000 megawatts out of operation. The shutdown of these plants has deepened the electricity shortage across the country.
