Pakistan’s weekly inflation has recorded a decline after five consecutive weeks of increase, with the recent reduction in petroleum product prices beginning to show its impact on overall price trends.
According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, weekly inflation fell by 0.7%. Officials say the easing trend is linked to a decrease in fuel prices, although annual inflation remains at a high level of 12.16%.
During the past week, prices of 17 essential items declined, while 17 items became more expensive and several remained stable.
The price of diesel dropped by Rs134.58 per litre, while petrol became cheaper by Rs12 per litre. The price of a domestic LPG cylinder also decreased by Rs230.52.
Among food items, chicken saw a sharp reduction of Rs45 per kilogram, while a 20-kg wheat flour bag became cheaper by Rs72. Other items that became cheaper include lentils, garlic, onions, sugar, ghee, firewood, and bananas.
However, several essential commodities recorded increases. Tomatoes rose by up to Rs5 per kilogram, eggs became costlier by Rs5.15 per dozen, and fresh milk increased by Rs2.50 per kilogram. Prices of mutton rose by Rs5 per kilogram and bread by Rs4. Items such as yogurt, mung dal, ghee, clothing, and soap also registered increases.
Meanwhile, prices of rice and 17 other essential items remained stable during the week.
Officials note that while fuel price reductions have helped ease short-term inflationary pressure, the overall cost of living remains elevated on an annual basis.
