A journalist who interviewed the United States president, Caitlin Doornbos, has said that President Donald Trump indicated negotiations with Iran could take place in Pakistan.
Speaking exclusively on Samaa TV’s programme ‘Redline With Talat Hussain’, Doornbos said the president had termed Pakistan as an important opportunity for such talks. She added that she had been due to return the following day but contacted the president to inform him of circulating rumours.
Doornbos said it would be “very interesting” if Pakistan was once again given the opportunity to host negotiations. She said she informed President Trump that she was in Islamabad and asked whether she should return. He initially advised her to come back.
She said that approximately 37 minutes later, the president telephoned her again and suggested that, if he were in her position, he would remain in Islamabad. He told her that circumstances were changing and that a significant development could occur within the next 48 hours. Following the call, she informed her editor that she would need to stay for a few more days.
Doornbos said it was unusual for a President to call back personally and described it as a first in her career. She added that the President appeared to have revised his view and said he did not want her to miss an important story.
Doornbos said President Trump praised Field Marshal Asim Munir. According to the journalist from the New York Post, the president said, “We will go there because they are doing very good work. Why should we go to a country that has no connection with this matter?”
She said the president made it clear that negotiations would be held in Islamabad.
