The spiritual leader of Catholic Christians, Pope Leo, has once again urged an end to war.
According to a news agency, Pope Leo addressed a prayer gathering for peace in Vatican City, where he strongly criticised pro-war elements. He said that self-interest and the worship of wealth had gone too far, and that displays of power and war had continued for too long. True strength, he said, is shown through service to life.
Pope Leo said that national leaders carry great responsibilities. He called on them to stop and said the time for peace had come. He urged them to sit at the table for negotiations and mediation, and not at tables where plans for increasing arms and decisions for destructive actions are made.
