Reports suggest that the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro may not deliver the major upgrades many users expect.
Industry speculation indicates the device could be a modest refresh rather than a groundbreaking update as Apple prepares for a more significant redesign in future iPhone models.
According to recent reports, Apple is planning to introduce a revised launch strategy for its upcoming smartphones.
Under this schedule, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to debut alongside Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone later this year.
However, the base model iPhone 18 and the successor to the iPhone Air may be delayed until early next year. Those devices are likely to launch around the same time as Samsung’s next flagship series, including the Galaxy S27 lineup from Samsung, as well as the rumored iPhone 18e.
Smaller dynamic Island
One of the most anticipated changes for the new iPhone Pro models was a smaller Dynamic Island.
This upgrade was expected because Apple had reportedly been working on moving the Face ID system beneath the display, leaving only the selfie camera visible.
If implemented, the change would have marked an important step toward a fully edge-to-edge display planned for future iPhones.
The absence of this upgrade could also affect expectations for Apple’s long-term roadmap.
Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, and reports suggest Apple is working on a special model, often referred to as the iPhone 20 Pro, which may feature a completely uninterrupted display with both Face ID and the front camera placed under the screen.
Without under-display Face ID in the iPhone 18 Pro, the timeline for such innovations may face delays.
Design expected to remain mostly unchanged
Reports indicate the iPhone 18 Pro will look almost identical to the iPhone 17 Pro.
The device is expected to retain the large camera module, overall design language, and general feel of its predecessor.
One possible design change is a slightly thicker body, which could allow Apple to include a marginally larger battery.
However, aside from potential adjustments to the rear glass tone or finish, major visual changes are not expected.
Hardware improvements may be limited
Despite the lack of visible changes, the phone could introduce some technical improvements.
The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to feature Apple’s first 2-nanometer processor, potentially delivering better efficiency and improved benchmark performance.
Other expected updates include:
-
A slightly larger battery capacity
-
A new version of Apple’s in-house cellular modem
However, reports suggest that these improvements may not significantly change everyday performance for users upgrading from devices like the iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro.
For most users, the real-world difference may only amount to slightly faster performance and modestly longer battery life.
