OpenAI has once again postponed the launch of a new feature called “adult mode” for ChatGPT.
The feature, initially expected earlier this year, would allow verified adult users to access erotica and other age-restricted content.
OpenAI has delayed the release of the proposed “adult mode” feature for ChatGPT, which is designed to provide verified adult users with access to certain adult-oriented content.
The update was first announced by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in October. At the time, he said the company planned to introduce stronger age-verification systems and expand content options for adult users.
Altman had stated that the company’s approach was based on the principle of “treating adult users like adults.”
The feature was initially expected to launch in December, alongside broader age-gating measures for the platform.
However, the rollout was delayed after an internal shift in priorities. Reports suggested that Altman circulated a “code red” memo, urging teams to focus on improving the core ChatGPT experience.
As a result, the release was pushed to the first quarter of this year.
Company now Prioritising core improvements
According to a spokesperson from OpenAI, the company has again postponed the launch to concentrate on improvements that affect a wider group of users.
The spokesperson said the company is currently focusing on enhancing areas such as:
-
ChatGPT’s intelligence
-
Its personality and conversational abilities
-
Making the chatbot more proactive
These improvements are considered a higher priority before introducing additional features.
OpenAI still supports concept
Despite the delay, OpenAI says it still supports the underlying idea behind the feature.
“We still believe in the principle of treating adults like adults, but getting the experience right will take more time,” the spokesperson said.
For now, the company has not provided a new timeline for when the feature might finally launch.
