Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned Tuesday of the danger of a direct military clash between nuclear powers, citing potentially catastrophic consequences amid escalating tensions over the war in Ukraine.
The statement followed claims by SVR that Britain and France were preparing to secretly supply Ukraine with nuclear-related technology and components. The agency did not present evidence to support the allegation, which French officials rejected as false. London had not issued an immediate response.
Moscow reiterated that any direct confrontation involving nuclear-armed states would carry grave global consequences.
Europe Pledges Continued Support for Ukraine
European leaders marked another anniversary of the conflict by reaffirming support for Ukraine, even as divisions among Kyiv’s allies complicated coordinated action.
The anniversary comes amid mounting strain within Europe, highlighted by Hungary’s veto of new European Union sanctions against Russia and a proposed €90 billion financial package for Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly urged partners to intensify sanctions and military assistance, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown no indication of ending the war.
G7 Reaffirms Backing for Kyiv
Leaders of the G7, including US President Donald Trump, issued a joint statement reaffirming “unwavering support” for Ukraine and endorsing diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a negotiated peace.
The leaders emphasised that any settlement must emerge from direct negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, while also supporting security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire.
Several European officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, travelled to Kyiv for commemorations. Von der Leyen said the European Union would ensure financial support for Ukraine despite political obstacles.
Stalemate on the Battlefield
Russian forces continue to make gradual territorial advances while launching missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure, particularly energy facilities.
Moscow has demanded that Ukraine cede remaining parts of the Donetsk region, a proposal Kyiv firmly rejects. In a public address, Zelenskyy said Ukraine would not abandon territory defended at great human cost.
Commemorations in Kyiv were marked by subdued ceremonies honouring those killed in the conflict, reflecting widespread war fatigue among Ukrainians as the fighting continues with no clear resolution in sight.
