Australia secured a consolation victory with a commanding nine-wicket win over Oman in their final Group B fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Friday.
Despite the emphatic result, Australia depart the tournament with disappointment after earlier defeats to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Wins against Ireland and Oman were not sufficient to carry them into the Super 8 stage.
After winning the toss and electing to field, Australia dismissed Oman for 104 in 16.2 overs. Adam Zampa led the attack with four wickets for 21 runs, while Glenn Maxwell claimed two for 13. Xavier Bartlett also took two wickets.
Oman never recovered from early setbacks. Aamir Kaleem fell to the first ball of the innings, and wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals. Wasim Ali top-scored with 32, but lacked support as the innings folded swiftly.
In reply, Australia reached the 105-run target in just 9.4 overs, finishing on 108 for one. Captain Mitchell Marsh struck an unbeaten 64 from 33 balls, including seven fours and four sixes. Travis Head made 32 before falling to Shakeel Ahmed, while Josh Inglis remained not out on 12.
Australia raced to 73 without loss in the powerplay and brought up 100 in 9.1 overs, sealing the result with more than ten overs to spare.
Meanwhile, Pakistan and New Zealand meet tomorrow in the opening match of the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026.
