Punjab has taken a leading position in the clean energy sector, laying the foundation for self-reliance and a green energy economy through biogas and waste-to-energy projects.
Modern green technology is set to reach both urban and rural areas of Punjab, a move seen as a significant step in addressing climate change. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the establishment of six biogas plants in the province. Four plants will be set up in Lahore, while two will be installed in Faisalabad.
These projects are expected to mark the practical start of clean energy production in Punjab, alongside savings in foreign exchange, the production of natural fertiliser, and the promotion of environmentally friendly energy.
An important meeting chaired by CM Maryam reviewed the Punjab’s clean energy future, during which a detailed briefing was presented. The meeting decided to seek viable proposals for small biogas plants, approved a feasibility study for a multi-fuel bio-refinery, and agreed to launch a waste-to-energy project in Lahore.
The chief minister also approved the inclusion of three pilot biogas projects under the Model Village Programme. The biogas plants will supply affordable gas for household use and provide bio-fertiliser for crops, benefiting both farmers and the environment.
Under the waste-to-energy project, plans are in place to supply low-cost electricity to electric buses and the metro bus system. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed that the waste-to-energy project be completed at the earliest.
