Pakistan has warned the United Nations that terrorism emanating from Afghanistan poses a grave threat to its national security.
In a strongly worded statement, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, said militant groups continue to operate freely across the border.
He urged the Taliban to take concrete steps or risk further destabilising the region.
Addressing the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said Pakistan faces an escalating threat from terrorist outfits based on Afghan soil.
He warned that organisations including ISIS-Khorasan, Al-Qaeda, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and the Majeed Brigade are taking advantage of safe havens.
The envoy said that despite repeated assurances, some elements within the Taliban continue to support these groups, allowing them to operate with impunity.
Pakistan records heavy losses this year
According to Asim Iftikhar, around 1,200 people have been martyred in terrorist attacks in Pakistan this year.
He stressed that the continued presence of these militants threatens national stability and regional peace.
He cautioned that if Afghan authorities fail to act decisively, Pakistan will be compelled to take “all necessary defensive measures” to safeguard its sovereignty.
Call for verifiable action by the Taliban
The Pakistani representative urged the Taliban to take credible, concrete, and verifiable action against terrorist entities.
He reiterated that cross-border terrorism cannot be ignored and remains a major stumbling block in regional security cooperation.
Speaking about Afghan refugees living in Pakistan, Asim Iftikhar said the decades-long conflict in Afghanistan has ended. He remarked that the situation now requires Afghan nationals to return to their homeland.
