US President Donald Trump arrived in Malaysia on Sunday to begin a crucial multi-nation tour of Asia, with high-stakes trade talks, peace agreements, and regional diplomacy topping the agenda.
The trip marks Trump’s first visit to Asia since returning to the White House in January and comes amid efforts to rebuild trade relations and reinforce America’s presence in the Indo-Pacific.
Focus on ASEAN and trade tariffs
Trump’s first stop is the ASEAN summit in Malaysia, where officials say tariff reform and access to rare-earth minerals will be central to Sunday’s discussions. He is also expected to preside over the signing of a peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia, following the deadliest clashes between the two neighbors in decades.

The president said on social media that the deal would be “signed immediately upon arrival,” calling it a “major step toward lasting peace in Southeast Asia.”
Strengthening Alliances in Japan
After Malaysia, Trump will head to Tokyo on Monday, where he is set to meet Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The US leader praised her as a “strong ally” of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, highlighting the importance of the Japan-US alliance.
Takaichi confirmed that “strengthening the Japan-US alliance is my administration’s top priority on the diplomatic and security front.”
Japan has largely escaped the brunt of US tariffs imposed in Trump’s previous term, though renewed discussions are expected on maintaining trade balance and regional security cooperation.
Meeting with Xi Jinping
The highlight of the trip will be Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea, aimed at finalizing a trade deal and ending the ongoing tariff war between the world’s two largest economies.
Trump is due to land in Busan on Wednesday for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, where he will also meet South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
During his departure from Washington, Trump hinted at the possibility of meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying he was “open to it” if conditions permit. The two last met in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in 2019.
Current US tariff rates for ASEAN nations
According to the latest data, Southeast Asian countries continue to face varying tariff levels:
-
Brunei: 25%
-
Cambodia: 19%
-
Indonesia: 19%
-
Laos: 40%
-
Malaysia: 19%
-
Myanmar: 40%
-
Philippines: 19%
-
Singapore: 10%
-
Thailand: 19%
-
Vietnam: 20%
-
Timor-Leste: 10%
While many rates have been revised downward after negotiations, trade access and tariff stability remain major talking points for regional leaders.
During a refuelling stop in Qatar, Trump met with Gulf leaders involved in the Gaza ceasefire deal, underlining Washington’s broader diplomatic push in the region.
He also plans to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit, signaling a renewed effort to improve ties after months of strained relations.
