The Punjab Assembly has referred the Punjab Partition of Movable Property Amendment Bill 2025 to its standing committee for review.
The amendment seeks to redefine the jurisdiction of property division cases, especially those involving a mix of agricultural and built-up land.
Key features of amendment bill
The amendment bill specifies that civil courts will have the authority to hear and decide property disputes where the built-up area exceeds the agricultural land.
According to the text of the bill:
-
Civil courts will handle cases involving residential or commercial built-up areas.
-
The term “preliminary degree” has been introduced to replace the word “degree” in legal proceedings.
-
If co-owners of a property cannot reach an agreement, the court will either appoint an arbitrator or, if needed, carry out the division itself.
Ending legal ambiguities
Lawmakers said the bill is designed to end confusion in mixed-property cases where both agricultural and built-up areas are involved. By clarifying jurisdiction, the law aims to reduce delays and disputes that often arise due to overlapping legal interpretations.
Presentation in assembly
The amendment bill was presented in the previous session by MPA Ameer Muhammad Khan. After discussion, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan referred it to the Punjab Assembly Standing Committee for further deliberation.
The committee will now examine the details before presenting its report back to the assembly.
