A conference was held in Islamabad on the fourth death anniversary of Syed Ali Geelani, where speakers paid tribute to the late Kashmiri leader’s lifelong struggle for the right to self-determination.
Chairman of the Kashmir Committee Rana Qasim Noon, addressing the gathering, hailed Gilani’s continuous resistance and sacrifices, saying his unwavering commitment earned him the title of “Quaid-e-Kashmir.”
Noon said the Kashmiri freedom movement is part of a long struggle that continues to inspire generations.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani (29 September 1929 – 1 September 2021) was an Islamist Kashmiri leader in Indian-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Known for his pro-Pakistan stance, he was often described as the father of the Kashmiri jihad.
Over the decades, Geelani became a prominent voice of the separatist movement, symbolizing resistance against Indian rule and advocating for Kashmir’s right to self-determination.
A lifelong member of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir since 1953, Geelani was considered one of its most influential leaders.
He also served as a three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly from Sopore, securing victories on a Jamaat-e-Islami ticket in 1972, 1977 and 1987.
