Ministry of Religious Affairs on Sunday opened the second phase of applications for the government Hajj scheme, allowing unregistered pilgrims to apply due to fewer-than-expected submissions in the first phase.
According to official figures, 60.3 percent of the quota has been filled so far, with 71,286 registered pilgrims submitting applications at designated banks over the past six days. Out of the total 118,210 seats allocated under the scheme, 46,924 remain vacant.
Authorities said the acceptance of applications will be stopped as soon as the quota is filled. Pilgrims can submit their applications along with the first installment of expenses by Aug. 16. For the long Hajj package, the first installment is set at 500,000 rupees, while for the short Hajj package it is 550,000 rupees.
Overseas Pakistanis can also apply for the scheme through close relatives in Pakistan. They will be required to submit a medical fitness certificate upon returning to the country.
