In welcome news for electricity consumers across Pakistan, including those in Karachi, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a reduction of Rs1.89 per unit in electricity tariffs under the quarterly adjustment for April to June 2025.
The decision promises substantial financial relief for millions of consumers over the next three months.
Tariff cut to benefit DISCOS and K-Electric users
According to NEPRA's decision, the reduction will apply to all consumers of power distribution companies (DISCOs), including K-Electric. The revised rates will be effective for August, September, and October 2025.
This move is expected to provide a total relief of Rs55.87 billion to electricity users during the three-month period.
Lifeline, prepaid consumers excluded
NEPRA clarified that the tariff cut will not apply to lifeline consumers or users on prepaid electricity meters. These categories of consumers are typically covered under separate subsidy frameworks or billing mechanisms.
Prices under monthly fuel adjustment
Moreover, NEPRA has also announced a reduction of 78 paisa per unit in electricity prices under the monthly fuel adjustment for June 2025, according to an official notification.
The reduced rates will be reflected in the electricity bills issued in August, offering relief to consumers across the country — except for those under K-Electric, as the reduction will not be applicable to its users.
Background of tariff adjustment
The reduction comes in response to requests made by various distribution companies during NEPRA’s public hearing on August 4, 2025. The proposal was evaluated under the quarterly tariff adjustment mechanism, which allows periodic revisions based on changes in fuel costs and other economic indicators.
After careful review, NEPRA approved the decrease and has now forwarded the decision to the federal government for formal notification.
