In a notable development, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party is facing another legal hurdle as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has announced the formation of a high-powered Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe allegations against the party digital media wing.
The JIT, which will be led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad, is tasked with investigating claims that PTI’s digital media operations have been involved in organised and malicious social media propaganda against the state and its institutions. The team will include officers from both the FIA and local police.
This move follows recent raids conducted by the police and FIA on PTI’s digital media wing. The raids were prompted by suspicious activities linked to Ahmed Waqas Janjua, a PTI member who was arrested a few days ago.
The authorities reportedly discovered troubling information on his mobile phone, leading to further investigations. PTI Information Secretary Rauf Hasan is also in custody related to this case.
The newly formed JIT is expected to conduct a thorough investigation and recommend legal actions against those found culpable. The team’s mandate includes examining the systematic nature of the alleged propaganda and taking appropriate measures as per the law.
