The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Friday unveiled its provincial budget for FY2026-27 in the Assembly.
The Rs2.17 trillion financial plan carries a Rs48 billion deficit along with key relief measures for employees. The session, however, turned chaotic as opposition women lawmakers staged strong protests.
KP budget FY2026-27 presented
Chief Minister Sohail Afridi presented the provincial budget for FY2026-27, announcing a total outlay of Rs2.17 trillion.
The budget carries an estimated fiscal deficit of Rs48 billion.
At the outset of his speech, he said PTI lawmakers had “unanimously decided” to present the budget despite earlier political uncertainty linked to meetings with PTI founder Imran Khan.
Afridi said the provincial government would not seek any loan to cover the Rs48 billion gap, adding that the shortfall would be managed through internal resources.
Salaries and pension increase announced
7% relief for employees
The budget includes a proposed 7 percent increase in salaries and pensions of government employees.
The minimum monthly wage has also been increased by Rs5,000, taking it to Rs45,000.
Officials said the measures aim to provide relief amid rising inflation while maintaining fiscal discipline.
Major sector allocations
The budget proposes major allocations across key sectors, including:
- Rs334 billion for health
- Rs468 billion for education
- Rs90 billion for local government
- Rs42 billion for energy
- Rs29 billion for agriculture
- Rs14 billion for transport
- Rs28 billion for Zakat
Additional allocations include:
- Rs50 billion for Sehat Card
- Rs15 billion for Ehsaas Deserving Program
- Rs14 billion for medicines in government hospitals
- Rs80 billion for MTI hospitals
- Rs36 billion for Peshawar Rehabilitation Program
Infrastructure and development projects
The government also outlined spending on infrastructure and development schemes, including:
- Rs52 billion for road infrastructure improvement
- Rs7.5 billion for BRT subsidy and bus procurement
- Rs2.2 billion for Rescue 1122 expansion
- Rs2.5 billion for e-bikes and rickshaw project
- Rs4 billion for new general hospital in Peshawar
- Rs1.5 billion for youth internship programme
Opposition protests disrupt assembly session
The budget session witnessed strong protests from opposition members, especially women lawmakers.
PML-N MPA Subia Shahid tore up a copy of the budget, expressing strong opposition during the session.

Opposition women members also sat in front of the Speaker’s dice as part of their protest, creating disruptions in the proceedings.
The opposition raised slogans and objected to the budget presentation, intensifying tensions inside the assembly.
