Pakistan’s livestock sector has recorded broad-based growth, with the Economic Survey 2025/26 showing an increase of two lakh in the country’s donkey population.
The official report highlights rising numbers across nearly all major livestock categories, reflecting continued expansion in the rural economy.
Goats, cows, and buffaloes also registered notable increases during the year.
According to the Economic Survey 2025/26, the number of donkeys in Pakistan has increased by two lakh over the past year.
The total population now stands at around six million to sixty-two lakh.
The report indicates steady growth in donkey numbers compared to the previous year, reflecting their continued role in rural transport and agriculture.
The number of mules in the country has been recorded at Donkey population rises by 200,000 in Pakistan, showing no major change in the latest survey.
Meanwhile, the horse population has remained steady at four lakh, according to official figures.
Buffaloes, cows record strong growth
The Economic Survey reports a notable rise in major livestock categories.
Buffaloes have increased to 49.1 million, up from 47.7 million last year — an increase of 1.4 million.
Cows have also reached a record 61.9 million, marking an increase of 2.2 million compared to the previous year.
Goats continue to dominate Pakistan’s livestock sector, with their population reaching 91.8 million.
This reflects an increase of 2.4 million over last year, making them the most numerous livestock animal in the country.
Sheep and camels also show growth
The survey shows that sheep numbers have increased to 33.5 million, up by 3 million compared to the previous year.
Camel population has been recorded at 1.193 million, reflecting a stable but gradually growing trend in the sector.

The data underscores the importance of livestock in supporting rural livelihoods and contributing to the national agricultural economy.
