At the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Pakistan sealed a five-run victory over Sri Lanka in a dramatic contest at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, yet failed to qualify for the semi-finals as New Zealand advanced in their place.
Set a target of 213, Sri Lanka mounted a spirited chase and finished on 207 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. Captain Dasun Shanaka struck an unbeaten 76 from 31 balls, while Pavan Rathnayake made 58 from 37 deliveries. Their late assault brought the contest to the final over, but Pakistan held their nerve.
Earlier, Pakistan amassed 212 for 8 after being put in to bat. Sahibzada Farhan led the charge with a commanding 100 from 60 balls, striking nine fours and five sixes. Fakhar Zaman provided forceful support with 84 from 42 deliveries as the pair shared a 176-run opening stand.
The innings lost momentum in the closing overs as Sri Lanka claimed quick wickets. Dilshan Madushanka returned figures of 3 for 33, while Dasun Shanaka took two wickets.
In reply, Sri Lanka faltered early but recovered through Rathnayake and Shanaka. Abrar Ahmed proved decisive for Pakistan, claiming 3 for 23 in his four overs. Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah took one wicket apiece.
Pakistan concluded their campaign with victory, though it proved hollow as their journey in the tournament came to an end.
