The head of the United Nations Security Council committee on Al-Qaeda sanctions has warned of a ‘serious threat’ to the region from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, stating that the group receives full operational support from Taliban authorities.
According to details surfaced on Thursday, Sandra Jensen Landi said that China has asked the committee to support the inclusion of the Balochistan Liberation Army and the Majeed Brigade on the list of designated terrorist organisations.
At a meeting of the committee, Landi said the TTP, which comprises almost six thousand militants, posed a grave danger to regional security. She said the Afghan Taliban support the proscribed group, which carries out major cross-border attacks on Pakistan. Some attacks caused large-scale loss of life.
Pakistan’s deputy representative, Usman Jadoon, told the meeting that Pakistan remains the front-line state in global counter-terrorism efforts. He said the dismantling of Al-Qaeda is largely the result of Pakistan’s actions. He added that security forces and law-enforcement agencies continue to confront the threat of terrorism.
China’s representative urged the committee to support the inclusion of the Balochistan Liberation Army and the Majeed Brigade on the terrorist list. During the meeting, Landi also highlighted the use of new technologies by disruptive elements in Africa for dangerous purposes.
