The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has proposed an amendment to the Income Tax Rules 2002, making electronic filing mandatory for individual taxpayers across Pakistan.
According to the official notification, taxpayers will now be required to submit income tax returns and withholding statements online, as part of FBR’s ongoing efforts to modernize and digitize the country’s tax administration system.
The FBR stated that the proposed amendment is designed to promote digital transparency within the tax system and improve efficiency in record management. The shift to online filing is expected to streamline tax compliance, reduce paperwork, and minimize opportunities for manual errors or manipulation.
Public feedback invited within seven days
As part of the legislative process, the FBR has invited suggestions and objections from stakeholders and the general public within seven days of the notification’s issuance.
After considering the feedback, the amendment will be finalized and incorporated into the existing tax framework. Once implemented, the rule will apply to all individual taxpayers required to file annual income tax returns and withholding statements.
Officials reiterated that embracing e-filing will simplify procedures, improve accountability, and strengthen trust between taxpayers and revenue authorities.
