The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has given the Punjab government four weeks to carry out fresh delimitation for local government elections.
According to the official order issued by the electoral watchdog on Wednesday, the provincial government is required to determine new boundaries under the provisions of the newly enacted law. The Punjab government had requested four weeks for this process.
The commission has made it clear that the legal framework mandates fresh delimitation following the approval of the new act. In a letter from the ECP secretary to the Punjab chief secretary, it was conveyed that the commission has accepted the provincial government's request and granted the required time.
The letter has also made it clear that should the Punjab government fail to complete the task within the given period, the matter would be taken up by the commission. A hearing has been scheduled before the commission following the four-week period.
The letter has also directed the Punjab government to provide the necessary data and maps to the ECP. It was reaffirmed that the local government elections in Punjab will be conducted under the Punjab Local Government Act 2025.
In light of the updated legal requirement, the electoral watchdog has withdrawn the delimitation schedule previously issued on October 9.
