Despite the import of sugar, prices showed little reduction across various cities.
In some, including Peshawar, sugar sold for between Rs195 and Rs200 per kilogram. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported a marginal decrease of only Rs0.5 per kilogram last week.
Last week, sugar prices ranged from Rs177 to Rs200 per kilogram in different cities nationwide, with an average price of Rs184 per kilogram. Over the week, the overall price fell by just five paisa per kilogram. The import of sugar failed to bring about a significant drop in prices.
Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa saw sugar prices remain high. In Peshawar, prices reached a peak of Rs200 per kilogram, while in Karachi they were Rs195 per kilogram.
In Larkana and Khuzdar, sugar was sold at Rs190 per kilogram, and in Sukkur and Bannu the price stood at Rs185 per kilogram. Multan recorded a highest price of Rs180 per kilogram, while Quetta’s price was Rs192 per kilogram.
Some Punjab cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Sialkot, saw sugar prices at Rs190 per kilogram, while in Lahore sugar sold for Rs177 per kilogram. The government has approved the import of 300,000 metric tonnes of sugar.
