The federal government has decided against importing wheat from the foreign countries.
According to details surfaced on Thursday, Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain announced that existing wheat reserves are sufficient to meet national requirements.
At the 8th meeting of the Wheat Board, chaired by Hussain, the demand and supply of wheat and availability of agricultural commodities for the Rabi season were reviewed.
"The country’s wheat stock stands at 33.47 million metric tonnes, against a national requirement of 33.58 million tonnes. The minor shortfall is not a cause for concern", he added.
He said, "The government prioritises protecting farmers’ interests over those of traders. Sufficient supplies of urea and other agricultural inputs for the Rabi season have been secured, with strict control maintained over fertiliser prices nationwide."
Hussain maintained: "The minister warned that stringent measures at the provincial level could create panic in the market."
